Cal Sutliff was a dedicated and accomplished rower whose journey began at Washington-Lee High School in Arlington, Virginia, inspired by the legendary coach, Charlie Butt. After briefly rowing at the Naval Academy, Cal stepped away from the sport–only to return decades later with renewed vigor following a successful career as a cable TV entrepreneur. Over the next 30 years, he became a fierce competitor on the Masters circuit, earning more than 130 medals in national and international regattas as both a lightweight and heavyweight rower. A lifelong member of the Potomac Boat Club, Cal served as House Chairman for 12 years. He was also a proud member of the Upper Thames Rowing Club and honored to be invited into the prestigious Leander Club.

In his memory, the Potomac River Boathouse Foundation has established the Cal Sutliff Flag Fund, which will support the maintenance of the boathouse flags and the purchase of new ones–a fitting tribute to Cal’s enduring presence and pride in the club he loved so much.
